Hello again, my faithful readers. It has been a busy week at the Mercy Spring Ranch, and I am eager to tell you all about it. I have so much to do here to keep the ranch running properly. It is a wonder that I even have time to write this blog!
This was a big week for a new horse handler. She had just completed her formal training, so now it was time for me to break her in (though I could not help but feel that she thought that she was training ME!).
As I strolled about the Round Pen, I became more and more comfortable with her. I picked up on her body language, and she soon picked up on mine. I could tell when she wanted me to walk, trot, or canter. It was a lot of fun! I really felt that we had joined up with one another.
As she walked away, I felt sad that our time was over, so I started to follow her. When she looked back and saw my approach, tears started to form in her eyes. Soon there was not a dry eye in the Round Pen, as the two of us achieved a deep bond. It was a sweet moment that we will both treasure.
The other big event of my week was spending time with Dr. Kami of the Pioneer Equine Hospital. It was time for one of her house calls to the ranch, so naturally she wanted to spend time with me. Dr. Kami is one of my favorite humans who visit the ranch.
I was scheduled for a Floating. Now before you think that I went for a swim in a local pond, floating is a dental procedure for horses. It is the removal of sharp points from the cheek side of a horse’s upper teeth, and from the tongue side of the lower teeth.
Floating allows me to chew my food more thoroughly. Those of you who know me understand that eating is a high priority in my daily routine. I have never been known to turn away from a pile of hay or a fresh patch of grass. Practicing good dental hygiene and regular floating ensures that I will be able to savor every bite of food within my reach.
Well, that’s it for this posting. I hope to see many of you at the ranch soon, especially at the Heirloom Tomato Plant Sale on April 16th from 9am to 2pm.
Happy Trails,
Gimli
