Hello my friends, and welcome to another installment of life at Mercy Spring Ranch, as seen through the eyes of your faithful correspondent, Gimli Black.
I don’t want to turn this blog into a running soap opera or a harlequin romance novel, but there seems to have been a relational breakthrough in my life over the past week that the whole world needs to hear about (directly from me, as opposed to the tabloids). I refer, of course, to the on-again and off-again romance between myself and Ladyhawke.
Regular readers of this blog will remember reading about my being put into the dreaded Friend Zone by Ladyhawke. (See the Gimli Gazette, Issue Twenty-Three, for more details.) I will admit that it hurt at first, but I quickly moved on (as they say, there are always more fish in the sea, and more mares in the pasture).
The week did not start out well for us. A couple of amateur human musicians arrived at the ranch with their instruments. They tried to audition for a place in my paddock band. I could tell with a single glance that they would not measure up to my high musical standards, but I was willing to give them a listen anyways.
As I approached them to hear their audition, Ladyhawke swooped in and attempted to push me away. She has done this before, when she felt that I was getting too much attention at her expense from children visiting the ranch. I interpreted this jealousy to be due to her growing affection for me. She wants to be the sole object of my affection.
Her feelings for me were confirmed later in the week when we were having our morning meal. Our hay barrels are located close to each other, as we share adjoining paddocks. Ladyhawke kept sticking her head through the metal gate to nibble on some of my own precious hay. I tolerated this at first (being the selfless horse that I am!), but she kept ignoring her portion and kept going for mine.
Not to be deprived of my daily allotment of food, I reached down for the disputed hay, and started to chew on the same bunch that Ladyhawke had in her mouth.
What happened next can only be described as magical! We both started chewing on opposite ends of the hay. As we worked our way through one strand of hay, our mouths drew closer. As the hay became smaller and smaller, our lips were drawn together. You could cut the romantic tension in the air with a knife!
It was just like that scene from the movie Lady and the Tramp. Instead of a long piece of spaghetti shared between two dogs (drawing them together into a spontaneous kiss), this single strand of hay was uniting two equine hearts together in a special bond. It was the moment of a lifetime between Ladyhawke and myself that I will always treasure. I hope she feels the same way.
I guess this means that Ladyhawke is back on my Christmas shopping list. Fortunately there is a wide selection of gifts available on the MSR Merch website page that would be perfect for her.
There are also holiday options. A horseshoe ornament would look particularly festive in her paddock. I would order her a Horse Wreath, but I fear that I would eat it in my sleep (even though it is not made of real branches) before I could give it to her. I had better get my order in early before they run out of handmade Christmas gifts!
Well, that’s all for this week. I hope you are all staying warm as the days get shorter.
Happy Trails,
Gimli November 7, 2022
