Hello my friends, and welcome to another exciting edition of the Gimli Gazette. Readers from around the world come to this blog to learn about the behind-the-scenes activities of Mercy Spring Ranch (MSR).
The horses at MSR have been known to do battle with many insects that find their way onto the ranch. Flies are rather annoying. You may see Connor from time to time wearing a fly mask to keep them away from his face. I simply choose to ignore them.
What I don’t ignore is a dive-bombing bees. Apart from their sting, these nasty creatures make loud noises that throw off my musical contemplations. Their continual buzzing is not good for my mental health. I won’t go so far as saying that the ranch is a toxic workplace for me, but I have been seen Googling information about worker’s comp claims on my laptop.
What really drives me crazy is that the bees seem to ignore Connor. Perhaps it is that thick coat on him (we like to call him the YAK). I am out in the arena jumping around to avoid their stingers while Connor calmly watches me in amusement, as though I am trying out new dance moves. (Note to self — record a new dance video to coincide with my next CD release).
I have a theory as to why the bees may be harassing me. At first, I thought that it was because I am so sweet. They must be simply drawn to me! Now I am convinced that my honey coloring pulls them in my direction. I can understand that bees may have good taste and thus wish to be seen around me; but I have an active life, and I cannot waste valuable time dodging aerial assaults from the swarming apiculture around the ranch.
As I mentioned last week, the new tomato list comes out this Wednesday, when folks can place their orders. The actual seed planting starts soon. Helpers are always sought and appreciated. Newbies to the world of tomato horticulture are welcome as well. Instruction will be provided.
Our Horse Handler Training, originally scheduled for January and February, has been canceled. This is a bummer for me, because I really enjoy working with the new handlers. I like to train them during the early stages of their lessons, to prevent any bad habits from developing. Fortunately there are other ways to help out at the ranch that do not involve horses. Hit up Miss Mo for more details.
Well that’s all for this week. I’ve been enjoying this break from the monsoons and have been basking in the sunshine. I hope this winter has been going well for you.
Happy Trails,
Gimli January 30, 2023
