Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Gimli Gazette, where people from all around the world gather to discover wisdom and insight far beyond their natural understanding.
Last week was Session Two of the Horse Handler Training. I was pleased to see that everyone returned for another day of learning about the wonder of horses.
After spending time reviewing Session One lessons on grooming and paddock procedures, the students spent time in the arena learning how best to guide a horse around obstacles. I took extra care to make sure that my students understood the subtle nuances of communicating with me.
Then it was off to the Round Pen, where Ladyhawke and I had time to work out with Miss Mo before we would Join-Up with her in the middle of the pen. I humbly have to say that my performance for the students was exceptional!
This was followed by a demonstration of horse feeding in the arena. Three piles of hay were spread out on the ground, and the students were able to observe our table manners as we devoured the food. Ladyhawke, Connor, and I made quick work of this bonus hay, as we followed our own pecking order for who eats when and where.
It was at this point that I got a little upset with Miss Mo. She had been revealing some of my personal secrets to the students all day long. I did not mind when she shared about how much I like having my withers scratched (bring it on!), but I drew the line when she commented on my more “playful” behaviors.
For some unknown reason, Miss Mo is not thrilled when I chew on anything and everything within my reach. If I attempt to open my paddock gate when no one is looking, or kick around my feeder at all hours of the day, I get a nasty look from her. Does she not know that this is how Haflingers play???
She was also not impressed when I would take a little bite out of Connor every time he got too close to my beloved Ladyhawke. Connor’s actions were a violation of horse bro-code. Ladyhawke is mine, and I had to deal with the situation before things got out of control. Hopefully Connor has learned his place and will think twice before “putting the moves” on Ladyhawke.
Well, that should do it for this week. The weather is getting warmer, which means that we are getting closer to the time when children will be returning to the ranch for sessions. I can’t wait!
Happy Trails,
